Finnish Government Guarantees Broadband

by John McCann on October 15, 2009

I didn’t mean to mention Finland again as it is really a small market when we look at the entire European Telecom business.  However the Finnish government made a very interesting announcement.  You can see it here on CNN.

Basically the Finnish government has ruled that Broadband Internet service is a basic human right.  this means that every one of the 5.2 million residents of Finland must be able to get Internet at a speed of at least 1Megabit per second.  I’d like to see them figure out a way to give access to the nomadic people of the Sami.

It could only happen in the land that made Linus Torvalds.

They’re not stopping at 1 Megabit though.  This is just a stopgap measure and their goal is to have 100Mbit/second feeds to every person in finland by 2015.
