Over the last few weeks there have been a slew of news articles in the press regarding Fiber to the Premise in various parts of the European Continent. This is something that has been bandied about for years but a real market-step forward has yet to materialize.
Now the “step-forward” seems to have been completed by the smaller operators in limited installations. These networks are not in the economic powerhouses of Germany or the UK or even in the early technology adoption countries of the Nordics but rather these networks are in Switzerland, Portgual, Netherlands and smaller eastern European countries. I don’t know about anyone else’s experience but this has happened right under this author’s nose.
In the case of The Netherlands and Switzerland there are strong public support organizations behind the infrastructure build. In addition to public pressure the geography and population densities mean faster ROI.
So are the big Companies/Countries getting in on the game? It looks like it with today’s news regarding a bold FTTX plan from British Telecom.
Let’s hope Carrier or Governments in Germany, France, Italy and Spain start pushing this forward as well.
